The first reaction for Margot Robbie‘s Barbie has surfaced, thanks to Mattel expert Eliana Dockterman. She says the upcoming Greta Gerwig directional is not perfect. Nonetheless, the film is a “self-aware romp”.
This is what she said about Barbie in her Time review:
“But I can share that it’s a fun yet self-aware romp with shades of Clueless and Legally Blonde. It’s also stuffed full of ideas, and occasionally overwhelmed by them,” she said.
Dockterman spoke highly of Ryan Gosling’s performance in the film. “I won’t give away Ken’s story, but Gosling nearly steals the show.”
Eliana Dockterman’s reaction indicates that Barbie may earn a mostly positive reception from the critics upon its theatrical release. The film’s clips have given viewers a taste of the magical world of Barbieland and its residents. They show that Gerwig has poured all her imagination and creativity into the film. Making a movie on Barbie dolls and bringing the vibrancy of their world to the audience must have been a near-impossible task for the director. But she completed the task. Now, it is up to the viewers to decide if the film is good or a huge misfire from Gerwig.
Barbie will release in front of Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer on July 21. Fans cannot wait to find out which movie will emerge victorious at the box office. Both movies have one common feature that can save them from being a box office disaster: their budgets. Coincidentally, both flicks have $100 million budgets. And they are expected to get a tremendous response from fans in theatres. This scenario can lead both flicks toward financial success. Yes, one of them will eventually defeat the other one. But both are guaranteed box office hits.
Although, it is safe to assume that Nolan’s Oppenheimer may earn more than Barbie, considering the director’s impeccable record of delivering blockbusters, except Tenet (the film turned out unsuccessful due to the COVID-19 restrictions). Still, the film was a critical success. Now, back to Oppenheimer and Barbie.
Yes, Oppenheimer has received an ‘R’ rating. The rated-R category functions like a double-edged sword. But if we consider Nolan’s popularity and his knack for delivering cinematic masterpieces, Oppenheimer is a sure money-maker for Syncopy and Universal. Barbie is also expected to collect handsome profits for Warner Bros.
Barbie will come out in theatres worldwide on July 21. Stay tuned for more updates.
