American multinational toy manufacturing and entertainment company Mattel, Inc. is ready to have another film based off of one of their iconic toys. Following the mega-success of ‘Barbie’, a feature about the iconic real-world die-cast toy vehicle line ‘Matchbox’ is on the way.
After successfully launching the Extraction film franchise from Netflix starring Chris Hemsworth and Randeep Hooda, director Sam Hargrave is eyeing another live-action thriller.
The iconic Matchbox brand was invented in 1953 by automotive enthusiast Jack Odell to solve a challenge for his daughter: she was only allowed to take a toy to school if it was small enough to fit in a matchbox. When his daughter’s school friends too began clamoring for a “matchbox car,” the brand was born.
The legacy of the brand has grown to such heights that today, two Matchbox cars are sold every second somewhere around the world on an average. While plot details are being kept under wraps for now, the film is sure to feature thrilling sequences that will rival any popular car chase around town.
Riding the high of the massive success of Barbie, Mattel Films’ vision to collaborate with leading filmmakers to develop content based off of iconic brands has other feature films based on Hot Wheels, Bob the Builder, Magic 8 Ball, Thomas & Friends, UNO, and more in the making!
