Disney and WB have been competing in the ‘Superhero’ and ‘Comic’ genre of films for a long time and have shown a few flairs of excellence. But in one aspect, both can’t stand on the pinnacle of the podium. They excel at ‘how to ruin a franchise that you absolutely love.’
In terms of Disney’s Star Wars endeavors, it has lacked any sort of creative direction and, more than that, passion lately. Warner Bros Discovery is practically undermining the Superman franchise and hasn’t delivered anything promising. The exit of Henry Cavill and Zack Snyder marks the end of an era.
During a recent podcast, Matthew Vaughn discussed some of his visions for these fallen franchises.
Vaughn stated that he and comic book writer Mark Millar had the significant concept of “a three-picture trilogy” for Superman at Warner Bros. As they pitched the idea, WB simply threw it down the drain.
Vaughn mentioned that he believed Richard Donner’s Superman films had a significant influence on the proposed trilogy. He expressed the idea that Wonder Woman’s success was partly due to its resemblance to a Donner Superman film but with a fresh interpretation. He also mentioned his intention to create a modern take on the Donner films.
And how would he spice it up, you ask? He clarified their main concept, which revolved around the idea that Krypton didn’t immediately explode as commonly understood. Instead, the planet’s destruction happened later, with a delay. As Superman matures, a mass departure from Krypton occurs, triggering a series of tumultuous events. This formed the crux of their concept.
That would indeed provide a new perspective to the audience. In terms of villains, Lex Luthor will act as the main antagonist until the event on Krypton occurs. Then Zod and Brainiac will fill those shoes.
Vaughn also has a plan to reboot Star Wars, especially the more popular faces, including Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader.
He believes it’s an exciting prospect, even if it challenges the canon. Vaughn questioned why Star Wars characters remain off-limits for reboots, considering how other franchises like James Bond have evolved.
Matthew suggested that focusing solely on the Skywalker family has limited the franchise’s potential and that it’s time for an epic new film to reinvigorate the saga. While acknowledging the success of Disney+ series, Vaughn is eager to see a fresh approach in the Star Wars cinematic universe.
Now, the reboot strategy has failed again and again for DC, but it’s not the reboot that’s causing the problems; it’s the frequency of it. Star Wars is filled with iconic faces, characters, and casts, but giving it a fresh take with worthy names will only do good.
In terms of the Superman vision, the studios have already let the most beloved name go, and some might say it’s beyond redemption. But this fresh take by Vaughn might gift the fans a new experience. However, it’s WB and Disney, and listening to the fans is the last thing they will ever do, and that’s an assurance.
