After years of enduring complaints from fans about staying away from “too much blood or violence”, MCU has finally opened the doors for R-rated projects. Echo’s latest trailer confirmed this scenario. The upcoming Vincent D’Onofrio starrer will be MCU’s first R-rated series. Now, MCU’s Blade, starring Mahershala Ali, will be rated R as well.
Blade director Yann Demange recently spoke to Deadline about the upcoming MCU project based on the popular Marvel’s vampire hunter. He disclosed that the film will be rated R by saying this: “They gave me the R, which is so important.”
MCU’s Blade became a hot topic after Mahershala Ali showed his dissatisfaction with the script, leading towards the film’s creative overhaul. “I’m excited to show a kind of ruthlessness, a roughness he [Ali] has, that allows him to walk the earth in a particular way,” Demange added.
Marvel giving the R-rated treatment to Blade is a big positive sign as it shows that the studio is learning to take more risks and work with more creative freedom. We cannot even imagine Blade without the R-rated treatment, as he is one of the bloodiest and most violent characters in the comics. This scenario enables Demange to tackle the film’s mature themes and decide how dark he wants to go with the film’s storyline.
Wesley Snipes first played the iconic vampire hunter in Blade (1998). After that, we also witnessed him in Blade II (2002) and Blade: Trinity (2004). All of these movies were rated R as well.
The R-rated category does not guarantee that a film is amazing. But it does help the filmmakers and actors in terms of pushing their limits and working with dark and intriguing storylines. Blade’s R-rated treatment will certainly shut the mouths of those who became tired of MCU’s family-friendly tone. Apart from Blade and Echo, Deadpool 3 will be rated R, too. Stay tuned for more updates.
