Definitely one of the first big releases of the year, Mean Girls has all the potential to set the tone for the year. By all means, it definitely got a strong start, at least from the previews and predictions.
Mean Girls is now competing with The Beekeeper, both fresh faces in the release charts, and will definitely push the success of Anyone But You or Timothée Chalamet’s Wonka. The statistics of the box office do promise a change as it also has a hangover from all the holiday movies.
In terms of critics’ reviews, Mean Girls did see a mean response, but everyone knows that it won’t stop them from hitting a good benchmark. Films like Mean Girls, the high school dramas, and musicals are always bashed by the critics, but the fans don’t watch it for some phenomenal acting or camera work.
It is nothing but a matter of nostalgia and comfort. In the language of Willem Dafoe, people love to watch ‘stupid’ stuff, which eventually isn’t a bad thing. Not all movies can or basically should be intellectually pleasing.
Just from the previews, the film grossed $3.25M, and that’s the storm building. The pink tornado will definitely take over the box office market for the upcoming weeks. Even the Friday targeted $12.3M, and the weekend is projected to gross $29M.
The original one grossed $130M worldwide as the reboot of the franchise will definitely aiming to beat the number with ease.
The market is obviously somewhat saturated by the other holiday films, and the sassy Mean Girls are exactly what viewers need. With a 6.4 on IMDb and 72% on Rotten Tomatoes, it doesn’t really scream success from a critical point of view, but financial success is necessary for the studios as well.
