One more week is here, and with it comes a new weekend report on the performance of the films, featuring some definite surprises. For starters, “IF” fell short of expectations, while “Godzilla X Kong” is still fighting at the box office.
Let’s begin the journey, shall we?
“IF” comes out at the very top spot but receives fair criticism regarding the film. Even labeled as a children’s film, critics are fairly skeptical about it, even suggesting that children will lose interest. This sentiment is reflected in the box office numbers, as it was projected to gross around $40M.
However, the actual numbers show it opened below projection, with a domestic $35M. On the international market, $20M seems fair, bringing the total gross to $55M. But with a budget of $110M for a kids’ film, things look tough.
Next come the apes. “Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes” stands at the second spot. Though the numbers have fallen, they are still strong enough, with a $26M total for the past weekend.
Horror is still ruling the industry. Lionsgate’s horror “The Strangers: Chapter 1” exceeded projections, grossing $12M, which was 30% more than the previous projection for the opening. Though the film was crucified in the ratings, it is still loved by the fans.
Then comes the action drama “The Fall Guys.” The action film will definitely have a hard time recovering its budget. Not all action content is for the masses, and this is one of them. Though the film carries a very heartwarming message, it will be left unheard by the masses. It grossed $8.5M this week and will likely fall drastically in the coming weeks.
Next is the sports romance “Challengers.” The Zendaya film has a strong possibility of working wonders in the OTT space, but the big screen isn’t really its cup of tea. Grossing $2.9M, this film is stumbling and might fall even deeper.
“Back to Black” follows “Challengers” in terms of box office ratings, with a similar $2.9M. With a small budget, it had a solid enough debut and looks good for the film in the upcoming weeks.
“Tarot” occupies the seventh spot with $2M and is followed by “Godzilla X Kong” with $1.7M for the weekend. The box office is going strong for the Monsterverse film, even though it had a solid IMAX run.
“Blue Angels” and “Unsung Hero” occupy the final two spots, with $1.3M and $1.1M, respectively.
Though the stats are falling, 22% lower than last year’s numbers, some fresh releases like “Furiosa” or “Deadpool and Wolverine” might heal the numbers in no time.
