After years of speculations, Marvel Studios finally releases the first trailer of much-anticipated Eternals and it’s worth the wait! Earlier yesterday we witnessed a new band of superheroes rising after 7 years of the last band of superheroes in MCU, the Guardians of the Galaxy debuted in 2014.
Now we know that these Eternals are not as famous as our Iron-Man, Captain America, Thor, Hulk or Spider-Man, especially outside America but let’s try to find out who they actually are! The Eternals were created by Jack Kirby, the creator of Captain America and Thor in 1976 and they have developed a large following in the last 40 years in America. The Eternals are essentially a fictional race of humanoids that were created by alien celestials to protect Earth from the Deviants which is another race of humanoids.
Now MCU has stacked up a fantastic roster of cast members to portray the Eternals. So, let us not waste any more time and just jump right into it to make ourselves familiar with the who’s who of the newest band of heroes.
Ikaris & Sersi:
The Eternals are led by Ikaris who has the strength of flying, cosmic beams from the eyes and super-strength equivalent to the powers of DC’s Superman. Game of Thrones Richard Madden will portray Ikaris. Along with him, we see Gemma Chan from Doctor Who as the all-powerful and empathetic Sersi who is the love interest of Ikaris for centuries. Sersi has disguised herself as a museum curator on Earth for a long time.
Kingo:
After them, we get an Indian connection with Kingo. Kingo will be portrayed by Pakistani-American actor Kumail Nanjiani. To talk about Kingo, he also possesses super-strength and can project cosmic energy projectiles from his hands just like Ikaris. Kingo disguised himself as a Bollywood actor on Earth. Nanjiani mentioned that his character was a mixture of Die Hard’s John McClane and Bollywood actor Hrithik Roshan. We will also be witnessing veteran Indian actor Harish Patel as Karan, an assistant to Kingo.
Phastos & Makkari:
Bryan Tyree Henry of This is Us and Lauren Ridloff of The Walking Dead will play the roles of Phastos, the cosmic inventor and the deaf superhero with super-speed, Makkari. Phastos is the first ever gay superhero in MCU and he secretly helps the mankind in in advancement of technology.
Sprite & Druig:
Sprite, the illusionist Eternal, disguised as a 12-years old girl and Druig, a rogue Eternal with a power of mental manipulation are portrayed by Lia McHugh and Dunkirk’s Barry Keoghan.
Gilgamesh, Ajak & Thena:
These three are probably the most anticipated of the Eternals, cast wise and power wise. Gilgamesh is the strongest of the Eternals, equivalent to Hulk in the Avengers but calmer than him. He was Thena’s partner in their exile from the other Eternals. Now, if we talk about the casting, Train to Busan’s Don Lee will portray Gilgamesh and Ajak, the spiritual lead of Eternals and Thena, the fierce warrior, will be portrayed by two of the most charismatic actresses in the world, Salma Hayek and Angelina Jolie. Salma Hayek’s Ajak is also healer of the Eternals.
Apart from these powerful Eternals, we also will have Black Knight aka Dan Whitman who is the only human amongst these superheroes and has the ability to wield a mystical sword. Black Knight will be portrayed by another Game of Thrones actor Kit Harrington.
This is all about the upcoming band of superheroes. The Eternals will be directed by Chloé Zhao who recently garnered international fame for directing Nomadland for which she won an Academy award in this year’s ceremony and from that perspective; it’s safe to say that the film is in safe hands.
So, that’s it folks. We will now just have to wait for these superheroes to unleash their prowess with the release of November 5, 2021, as a part of Phase Four of the MCU.
