Megalopolis is Francis Ford Coppola’s dream project, led by Adam Driver. Coppola’s newest and most ambitious epic sci-fi recently premiered at the Universal CityWalk IMAX Theatre in LA, California. According to Deadline, the film received a thunderous standing ovation after the premiere. However, Matthew Belloni from Puck News revealed that the initial reactions towards the movie were shocking.
Coppola’s Megalopolis was in development for nearly 20 years before receiving its premiere. As per Deadline, the Adam Driver starrer managed to mesmerize the viewers with its intriguing and unique blend of past and future. On the other hand, Belloni has disclosed that one of the attendees told him that Megalopolis had “zero commercial prospects”. In his words, early reactions towards Coppola’s epic sci-fi film were “batsh*t crazy”. In addition, some attendees have criticised the film’s “baffling” climax.
Megalopolis has yet to find a distributor. Given its divisive early reactions, it seems like the film may face more trouble in future. After all, major studios generally stay away from odd or bizarre films. It will be hard for Coppola to strike a satisfactory deal with prominent production houses like Universal or Warner Bros regarding the film’s distribution. As a result, Megalopolis may have to settle with a smaller distributor.
Belloni’s report declares Megalopolis a sure box-office failure, even if it somehow manages to find a distributor. Smaller distributors like Neon could step forward to take care of Coppola’s film in the United States. Neon also aided Michael Mann’s Ferrari, which also starred Adam Driver in the lead. However, Ferrari tanked at the global box office, earning only $43.5 million against a heavy budget of $95 million. Many critics complained about the film’s weird tone and complex narrative.
Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis has a humongous budget of $120 million (self-financed). It means only the audience’s reactions will save the film in theatres. Let’s see what happens. Megalopolis has a star-studded cast, consisting of talents like Adam Driver, Nathalie Emmanuel, Giancarlo Esposito, Jon Voight, Laurence Fishburne, Aubrey Plaza, Shia LaBeouf, Jason Schwartzmann, Kathryn Hunter, Talia Shire, Dustin Hoffman, and more.
