The first premiere of ‘Megalopolis’ is done with and it is being greeted with mixed reviews by critics and audiences. Coppola has once more successfully divided the audiences and they cannot decide whether it is the work of a mad genius, or a mess created by a filmmaker of no value in contemporary society.
Coppola’s ‘Apocalypse Now’ created a storm in the Cannes premiere four decades ago and it is being repeated once more. The internet is flooded with superbly positive and negative comments. It is certainly one of the films with the most radically differing reviews ever.
Some critics have said that ‘Megalopolis’ is Coppola’s best work ever and it is the pathfinder in a new direction where cinema is going. Some say that it is the highly ambitious of a mad genius and every frame of the movie is tinged with passion. Some Say that it reflects the final flames of artistic creativity of an artist yielding to mortality.
There are many negative comments as well. The movie has been rated a poor 38% on Rotten Tomatoes. It is said to be incoherent, incorrigible and not making any sense at all. Many are feeling it is hard to believe that Megalopolis comes from the director of Godfather. There are also comments that the movie is so illegible that the political commentary, the performances go in vain. The writing does not make any sense.
While some are relating Megalopolis to James Joyce’s ‘Ulysses’, it is very natural to speculate that it will be criticized for its format and style by many. We have to wait a long time before we can watch the movie ourselves and decide on what the movie is all about.
