MGM has dropped a high-spirited trailer for the upcoming George Clooney directional, The Boys in the Boat, a biographical sports drama based on Daniel James Brown’s 2013 novel.
The film stars Fantastic Beasts series fame, Callum Turner, and Joel Edgerton (Black Mass, The Gift, and Red Sparrow). The former plays Joe Rantz, a prominent American rower who bagged Olympic gold in the men’s eight at the 1936 Summer Olympics. Edgerton portrays Al Ulbrickson, the rowing coach, in the film.
‘The Boys in the Boat’ takes us back to the 1936 United States. That was a disappointing year for Americans as most of them suffered the consequences of The Great Depression. Joe Rantz (played by Turner) had no one in his life during that time. His parents abandoned him at a young age, forcing him to live his life on his own. To get a cheap place to live and pay the remaining fees of his semester at the University of Washington, he joined his university’s eight-man rowing team. Their hard work and determination gave them a golden opportunity to represent the United States at the 1936 Summer Olympics.
‘The Boys in the Boat’ is George Clooney’s ninth feature directional project. He has also helmed films like Good Night, and Good Luck (2005), The Ides of March (2011), The Monuments Men (2014), Suburbicon (2017), and more.
The film now has a fixed release window. It will come out in theatres on December 25, facing direct competition from Michael Mann’s Ferrari, starring Adam Driver.
MGM gave ‘The Boys in the Boat’ an early release window as the George Clooney directional earned highly positive reviews at early test screenings. Plus, the studio has eyes on the upcoming awards season as well. Stay tuned for more updates.
