Michelle Yeoh has been cast in Prime Video’s Blade Runner 2099 series, which will serve as a sequel to both the original Blade Runner (1982) and Blade Runner 2049 (2017) movies.
Plot details about the sequel series are being kept under wraps, but sources say Yeoh will play the protagonist, Olwen, in the show. Her character will be a replicant who will be seen living her final days in the series.
Production for Blade Runner 2099 has begun in Prague after a year-long delay due to Hollywood strikes. The show’s shoot was originally planned for Belfast, but the location has been shifted for undisclosed reasons.
The helmer of the original 1982 film, Ridley Scott, is one of the sequel show’s executive producers. Jonathan van Tulleken (best known for his work in Shōgun) will direct the first two episodes.
Considered one of the greatest action actresses of all time, Michelle Yeoh bagged her first Academy Award in March last year for her sensational and mesmerising performance in A24’s Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022). In addition, she has worked in plenty of popular films such as Tomorrow Never Dies (1997), Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000), Kung Fu Panda 2 (2011), Crazy Rich Asians (2018), Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021), and Transformers: Rise of the Beasts (2023). Stay tuned for more updates.
