As we reported a few days back, Mike Flanagan’s ‘Midnight Club‘ has been canceled at Netflix. Would that mean that all the plot details that S02 was supposed to reveal would stay unanswered forever for fans of the supernatural horror series? Thankfully, Flanagan to the delight of fans has revealed to fans explanations and backstories for some MAJOR plot details.
Dr. Stanton:
Dr. Stanton is the daughter of the original Paragon cult leader, Aceso. Her nickname was Athena and she wrote the Paragon journal that Ilonka found in S1. She turned on her mother and helped the kids escape, but she had the tattoo because she was part of the cult in her teenage years.
She hated what her mother became, and the atrocities of the cult. She reclaimed the property after her mom was gone, and wanted to change it into a place that celebrated life.
She is wearing a wig at the end of S1 not because of a sinister reason, but because she has cancer and is undergoing chemo.
The Janitor and the Shadow:
It would be revealed that the Shadow which Ilonka thought was Death is not, in fact, the personification of the entity. In fact, the Shadow is not a bad thing at all. Why?
Because the Shadow is THEMSELVES. It’s the Unknown. As it engulfs someone in the last moment of their life, it takes them through a place of understanding and catharsis, preparing them for the next step.
And the big reveal? The Janitor we briefly see in S1 is Death. It turns out the only people who ever saw this mysterious Janitor were the patients. He is Death and offers them kind words before they die.
The two ghosts Ilonka and Kevin see:
They are in fact as mentioned in the last moments of S01, Stanley Oscar Freelan and his wife, who built Brightcliffe. But the most interesting bit is why Ilonka only sees Stanley in the mirror, and sees the Cataract Woman whenever she looks at Kevin.
Because Ilonka and Kevin were spouses in a previous life but of different genders, with Ilonka being the husband as Stanley Oscar Freelan and Kevin being the wife. They’ve lived many lives this way, and are true SOUL MATES – they always find each other, and they always fall in love. In this life, they knew it would be a short one, so they agreed to find each other in the house they built.
They’ve been remembering who they are, glimpsing their former selves in reflections, and sometimes when they look at each other. This is also why Ilonka’s first words to Kevin in S1 were “Do I know you?” and Kevin thought she was familiar. They are two souls who always find each other, again and again.
All very interesting concepts, they would have made S02 even better. But reportedly due to low weekend viewing numbers, the series has been discontinued. With the creator signing a new deal with Amazon, Flanagan’s exit is a big hit for Netflix, already pushed down to #2 place in the US amongst streaming services.
