Turn the darkness into light, and we’ll make it out alive. The lyrics from MALACHII’s song, Make It Out Alive, perfectly sum up Sony’s latest short film – The Spider Within: A Spider-Verse Story. Both Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018) and Across the Spider-Verse (2023) showed the fans that Miles Morales juggled several responsibilities at once on multiple occasions. However, it seems like writer Khalia Amazan and helmer Jarelle Dampier have turned up a notch with their latest Spider-Verse short film. The clip digs deeper into Miles’ head and shows his struggle with anxiety, fear of failure, the pressure of handling too many responsibilities, his superhero duties, his academic performance, his lack of focus, and more.
The only thing that soothes Miles’ precious little mind is the music coming from his headphones. Instead of giving the protagonist a particular supervillain to deal with, The Spider Within puts Miles against an embodiment of all of his fears and anxieties. However, that embodiment soon transforms into a gigantic radioactive spider, similar to the one that bit Miles in the 2018 film. But before this whole ‘spider’ scene, we see Miles declining his father’s (Jefferson Davis) wish to see a horror movie together. It shows how tired and scared Miles is.
The latest short film proves that being a superhero takes work. But it also shows that Miles is actually scared of letting his parents down, especially his father, despite having such amazing powers.
