Last week, we had made you aware of Rohit Shetty’s ‘Sooryavanshi’ starring Akshay Kumar making its way to Netflix’s top ten global list in the non-English films category in terms of the total number of hours viewed on the Netflix OTT platform. The cop actioner was amongst the most-watched non-English films streaming on Netflix across the globe.
Into the bargain, as per the latest Netflix global top ten list, the widely admired Indian superhero movie ‘Minnal Murali’ has now entered the coveted list and it’s the first Malayalam film to do so. The film is behind just three international movie titles namely the Spanish rom-com ‘1000 Miles from Christmas’, Mexican comedy movie ‘Grumpy Christmas’, and the heartrending French drama ‘Vicky and Her Mystery’.
The website further states that ‘Minnal Murali’ was watched globally for an impressive 5.99 million hours last week, that is, from 20th December to 26th December. Whereas the most-watched non-English Netflix film ‘Vicky and Her Mystery’ was watched for 8.15 million hours during the same week. Moreover, ‘Sooryavanshi’ is still on the list with 2.39 million hours under its belt.
‘Minnal Murali’ boasts of another interesting info as per the website. Besides featuring in the top ten films list in India, the film also ranks amongst the top ten films in ten other countries including Bahrain, Bangladesh, Kuwait, Maldives, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Qatar, Sri Lanka, and UAE.
Helmed by Basil Joseph, ‘Minnal Murali’ is set during the 1990s period and follows the superhero origin story of a small-town tailor named Jaison (played by Tovino Thomas). When Jaison is struck by a bolt of lightning (in a rare astronomical event), it bestows him special powers like super speed, extraordinary strength, telekinesis, and extreme agility. How Jaison embraces his powers to become a local superhero and assumes the titular mantle of Minnal Murali to fight his evil counterpart and to protect the people, forms the rest of the film’s plot.
