Mithila Palkar Lands ‘In The Ring’, On Kolkata’s Female Muslim Boxers

U.S filmmaker Alka Raghuram has announced her new film, ‘In The Ring (Story of a Burqa Boxer)’, a fictional story set in the backdrop of the sport of boxing. Interestingly, her film focuses on a specific type of boxers – the female Muslim boxers of Khidderpore, Kolkata. This is Alka Raghuram’s next project on the aforementioned boxing community. She’s earlier made the critically acclaimed documentary, ‘Burkha Boxers’, on the same community of female Muslim boxers.

As per reports in the media, Alka Raghuram’s ‘In The Ring’ will star petite actress Mithila Palkar (Little Things, Karwaan), veteran actor Jaaved Jaaferi, and Bangladesh actor Siam Ahmed (Bishwoshundori, PoraMon 2) in crucial roles. Razia Shabnam, one of the first Indian women to become an international boxing referee and coach, plays a significant role in ‘In The Ring’.

Unlike her documentary, ‘In The Ring’ will be a fictional drama and psychological thriller. The story is centred on Shama, a 17-year-old boxer, who is framed for her aunt’s murder. With the national boxing championship coming up, Shama must exchange places with her double, to get a shot at the important tournament.

‘In The Ring’ will be directed by Alka Raghuram, and produced by Sreyashii Sengupta (Singapore production house Darpan Global) and Souvikk Dasgupta (Oriizon Global). ‘In The Ring’ will be a Hindi language film.
