On May 13th 2021, Mohanlal’s much awaited historic war epic ‘Marakkar: Lion of the Arabian Sea’ will clash against the Nivin Pauly’s 1940s historical drama ‘Thuramukham’ and Fahadh Faasil’s political crime thriller ‘Malik’ in the Kerala Box Office. But how did this Mollywood clash for the ages featuring two superstars and a megastar come about? Well, it all happened thanks to the indecision of the Kerala State Government.
When the Kerala State Government didn’t allow the running of second shows/ night shows as the month of March started which was speculated by many, most Mollywood movies which were expected to release in March were forcibly put on hold. This was because Kerala’s second shows are when a lot of the film audiences come to theaters to watch these movies, and it is during this time when film producers, distributors and theater owners make a huge chunk of profit, which is especially important during these post-COVID times. The Kerala Government eventually revised the movie operation timings and allowed night shows by the first week of March, but this delay in decision making created the mammoth clash of titans in the Kerala Box Office in May.
Films like the Mammootty – Manju Warrier starrer ‘The Priest’ decided to postpone the movie from its original release date (2nd March 2021) by a week, to the tentative date of 11th March 2021, which became official after the night show announcement was made on 8th of March. But the much anticipated Mohanlal historical war epic, Marakkar: Lion of the Arabian Sea postponed its March release date to May 13th 2021. Although many will be disappointed in having to wait for another 2 months to watch a Mohanlal epic, we will get to see Mohanlal’s movie duke it out against Nivin Pauly’s and Fahadh Faasil’s films.
The Priyadarshan written, directed and produced ‘Marakkar: Lion of the Arabian Sea’ will be about India’s first Naval Commander. Fahadh Faasil’s ‘Malik’ will be about a man named Sulaiman, who was responsible for resisting against the displacement of a minority community and helped them rise up against systematic oppression. Nivin Pauly’s ‘Thuramukham’ is a period film which will show the uprisings of labourers against the “chappa system” of labour allocation.
All three movies ‘Marakkar: Lion of the Arabian Sea’, ‘Thuramukham’ and ‘Malik’ are expected to drop in theaters on May 13th 2021.
