The highly anticipated Mohanlal thriller, ‘Marakkar: Lion of The Arabian Sea’ has released in theatres yesterday… And the film continues to defy expectations. Only a few days ago, it was revealed that ‘Marakkar’ had already made over Rs 100 crores in online reservations, making it the first Malayalam movie to reach that milestone. It set another record when the film released its first show yesterday, at 12:01 AM, on 2nd December 2021. And now, ‘Marakkar’ has set the record for the most money earned by a Malayalam movie on a weekend. And the weekend starts today.
The fact that the weekend box office record has been broken before the weekend has even properly begun is quite astonishing. Of course, this has happened because of the online reservations, but still, this achievement is quite ridiculous when you factor in the Covid-19 virus and its two pandemic waves. Especially for a state that has had 16 months of no theatres.
‘Marakkar: Lion of The Arabian Sea‘ isn’t well-liked by critics, however. According to the latest reports, the film is a visual masterpiece but doesn’t have a proper story. Still, the film is still raking in the money, which means that the film seems to appeal well to the film going crowd. ‘Kurup‘ has proved that the Malayalam film audiences are more than willing to go to theatres and for a film with pan-Indian appeal like ‘Marakkar’, it will have even more people willing to watch it.
With the film having just released, we wouldn’t be surprised if ‘Marakkar’ makes over a 150 crores within the first week alone. For now, we will have to wait and see.
