Another Malayalam film, ‘Cheraathukal’, is releasing on OTT, this thursday, and as per the latest “Mollywood Trend”, the movie will be releasing on multiple streaming platforms. ‘Cheraathukal’ will be the second Malayalam anthology film to release in 2021 with the multi-starrer ‘Aanum Pennum’ taking the honour of being the first Malayalam anthology film to come out, after it premiered in theatres, back in March 2021. However, ‘Cheraathukal’ will be setting a record of its own when it premieres day after tomorrow by becoming the first Malayalam anthology film to release directly on an OTT platform in 2021. Check out the trailer for the film, at the end of this article.
‘Cherathukal’ will be a collaboration of six stories which will have six different directors – all of them, directing debutants. Acclaimed writer CV Balakrishnan has written one of the stories, while Mala Parvathi, Mareena Michael and Adil Ibrahim will be the film leads. All six stories will be working on the theme of emotion, with each short film expected to work around one major emotion. Mala Parvathi will portray a nun who is at odds with herself, Adil Ibrahim will portray an unemployed engineer who finds happiness through another revenue stream and Mareena Michael will play a bold nurse with a modern outlook on life.
The rest of the cast includes Devaki Rajendran, Manohari Joy, Babu Annoor, Parvathi Arun and Sunil Guruvayoor. Vidhu Prathap, Ishan Dev, Thaha Kolpad and Nithya Mammen joined the film as singers and they worked closely with the movie’s six music directors and sound designer, Shefin Mayan. The overall film crew includes over a hundred technicians. Dr Mathew Mampra funded the anthology under the banner, Mampra Foundation.
With the Kochi High Court having extended the Statewide lockdown in Kerala from 16th June 2021 to 29th June 2021, more and more Malayalam movies will be forced to follow in ‘Cheraathukal’s’ footsteps, with theatres within the state slowly reaching 2 months of “lockdown”. Being a film with a relatively small budget, this movie can afford to go for a direct-to-OTT release, and with a multi-OTT release, the movie should be able to make back its production cost as well earn profits, with time.
‘Cheraathukal’ will premiere on June 17th 2021 on multiple OTT platforms including regional streaming platforms, Saina Play and Koode.
