The international box office has been a battleground lately. With breathtaking cinematography, mind-bending plotlines, and outstanding performances going head-to-head against each other to secure higher spots on the highest-grossing list of the week. Current contenders on ground are global superhits: ‘Monkey Man’ and ‘The First Omen’.
Legendary and Warner Bros.’ ‘Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire’ is expected to easily retain its No. 1 position as it could near a whopping global box office collection of $300 million by Sunday this week. Fighting for the spot next to it are the debut revenge thriller and the prequel horror.
While Dev Patel’s ‘Monkey Man’ combines two juxtaposing aspects of time: the legend of Hanuman and the John Wick series, Arkasha Stevenson’s ‘The First Omen’ pays homage to one of the greatest horror films of all time – The Omen – all the while delivering a scintillatingly horrifying experience! It is indeed a race against time itself.
While Stevenson’s feature will be a force to reckon with instantaneously as it is set to release widely, Patel’s debut will be a slow-burning fire with a stealthily expanding medium (read: theatres). So far, ‘Monkey Man’ has earned $1.4 million in previews, compared to $725,000 for ‘The First Omen’.
Will rolling out the film slowly rile up audiences with so much anticipation that it will prevail over the groundbreaking collections of ‘The First Omen’? We are – as we expect you to be too – quite literally, holding on to the edge of our seats to find out in due time!
