Newly surfaced details about Mufasa’s origin story could bring massive changes to Disney’s The Lion King’s lore. The entertainment conglomerate has planned to release Mufasa: The Lion King in theatres worldwide this Christmas season. Instead of serving as a sequel to the events of The Lion King (2019), the upcoming Barry Jenkins will serve as a tale of the past, showcasing the origin story of Simba’s father.
Disney’s panel unveiled the first-look images and footage from Mufasa: The Lion King at the recently concluded CinemaCon event. In the footage, Rafiki’s voice offers a shocking description of the protagonist, “A lion was born without a drop of nobility in his blood. A lion that would change our lives forever.”
The above statement indicates that Mufasa won’t be a part of a royal family in the forthcoming Barry Jenkins project, which seems interesting given that many fans believed that his father was also a king. Many also believe that Mufasa and Scar are a part of a royal bloodline. This scenario may not sit well with the diehard fans of the original 1994 animated classic. In the film, we see Mufasa talking about his father with little Simba. He suggests his son to look for guidance from “the great kings of his past”. Additionally, he says he will join them one day, as those great kings reside in the stars above.
There is a large portion of The Lion King’s fanbase that strongly believes that the forthcoming movie on Mufasa’s backstory is nothing except Disney’s another cash-grab attempt. However, the film’s newly unveiled synopsis has changed things. It seems that Mufasa’s tale of succession was not as simple as we once thought. Let’s see how the film turns out when it arrives in theatres on December 20, 2024. Mufasa: The Lion King stars Aaron Pierre (Mufasa), Kelvin Harrison Jr (Scar), Seth Rogen (Pumbaa), Billy Eichner (Timon), John Kani (Rafiki), and more. Stay tuned for more updates.
