‘Mummy’ star Brendan Fraser has reportedly been roped in for the upcoming live-action DC extended universe (DCEU) movie ‘Batgirl’ (via Deadline). It is also being speculated that Brendan Fraser will essay the role of the supervillain Firefly in the film and actress Leslie Grace is set to play the titular superhero Batgirl. Other cast members include J.K. Simmons as Police Commissioner Jim Gordon and Jacob Scipio, who had recently joined the film’s cast.
In the film, Barbara Gordon, the daughter of Police Commissioner Gordon, will purportedly assume the superhero identity of Batgirl. While Brendan Fraser’s character Firefly, as the name rather suggests, is expected to be seen as a sociopathic supervillain who has an obsessive compulsion to start fires. The precise plot details for the film are currently being kept under the wraps.
Brendan Fraser had catapulted to international fame through his role as Rick O’Connell in the blockbuster ‘Mummy’ films trilogy besides also being a part of popular films such as ‘Bedazzled’ and ‘George of the Jungle’ back in the 90s. The lovable and talented Canadian-American actor had recently reanimated his acting career by starring in TV series ‘The Affair’, anthology series ‘Trust’, Steven Soderbergh’s movie ‘No Sudden Move’, DC’s ‘Doom Patrol’ series, and the upcoming Martin Scorsese’s star-studded directorial ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’.
Warner Bros. and DC Films’ ‘Batgirl’ is being helmed by the director duo Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah (Bad Boys for Life). The film’s script has been written by Christina Hodson, who has previously lent her writing skills for ‘Bumblebee’, ‘Birds of Prey’, and another upcoming superhero movie ‘The Flash’. ‘Batgirl’ is expected to skip a theatrical release and land directly on the HBO Max streaming platform sometime in the year 2022.
