Must Watch Period K-Dramas That Will Take You Back In History

Netflix has released the teaser for Kingdom: Ashin of the North, a bonus one episode story that will be released in January 2021. The teaser was just a few seconds long and let me tell you, it was enough to pull you into the screen and get addicted to it. This will be a “sidequel”, meaning something that will go side by side with the main story. Kingdom is one gory, amazing, Korean period drama and there’s no way one can say, it isn’t amazing.

On that note, we have a list made for you specifically focusing on Korean Period dramas. If one doesn’t like watching zombies or killings and want a light watch, go on and pick one from the list or binge them all. There’s nothing like “too much K-Drama”.

Love in the Moonlight (Netflix)

Set in the historical times, the story follows the journey of the crown prince, the only beloved son of the king and a eunuch who supposedly should have been a man, but actually is our female protagonist who pretends to be man and slowly gets closer to the prince, as she is appointed in the royal court. The story is funny, cute and romantic at all times. The series has had instant success as it was released in South Korea and the media gave the name “Moonlight Syndrome” to the aftereffect of the series as it sent a massive success story around the country and abroad. The series stars Park Bo-gum and Kim Yoo-jung as the leads.

Hwarang (Netflix)

Set in the kingdom of Silla, the story follows an elite group of boys that come together to fight the privileges of the nobles. The group itself is known as the “Hwarang”. A journey full of friendship, bonds, family and love, this show puts forward an ensemble cast of Park Seo-joon, Go A-ra, Choi Min-ho, Park Hyung-sik, Kim Tae-hyung (V from BTS) and many more. The show consists of 20 episodes and a definite must watch

Rookie Historian Goo Hae-ryung (Netflix)

Starring Shin Sae-kyeong, Cha Eun-woo in the lead roles, this drama is set in the Josean dynasty and follows the journey of a scholar as she gets appointed into the royal court. She is quite new at her job and hence goes through a lot of ups and downs. This makes the 20 episodes long series filled with love and fun and makes it one of the top watches for period dramas on the streaming

My Country: The New Age (Netflix)

At the end of the Goryeo period, when their beloved country was transcending into a new era people had mixed feelings about how the country should be run. Different positions, different notions led two friends to turn into enemies. In the midst of a changing country and changing relations, this drama provides a lot. The drama stars Yang Se-jong, Woo Do-hwan, Seolhyun in the lead roles. The drama has 16 episodes and was aired in 2019.

Moon Embracing The Sun (Netflix)

Starring Han Ga-in, Kim Soo-hyun, Jung Il-woo in the lead roles, this drama takes the concept of moon and sun and the characters too are placed in such a manner that they reflect the relation of moon and sun. The show is set in the Joseon Dynasty and follows the lives of the royal family and the happenings leading to the crowning of the next king. The show is 20 episodes long and filled with gripping drama and romance.

Apart from Korean dramas have an array of period dramas that are comedic, romantic, along with being action-filled. Some of the others are The Tale of Nokdu, Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo, Tale of Arang, Mr. Sunshine, The Scholar who Walks The Night, and many more.
