Ritwik Ghatak is one of the masters of Indian cinema and the pioneers of the craft. He is considered among the holy trio of Bengali cinema alongside Satyajit Ray and Mrinal Sen.
Ritwik Ghatak’s movies reflect the strong angst of partition and the fresh pain, very personal to the filmmaker. His movies like ‘Meghe Dhaka Tara’ and ‘Jukti Tokko Ar Goppo’ took Bengali movies to the international audiences and surprised them with the stark originality of concepts.
‘Nagarik’ is a movie by Ritwik Ghatak that tells the story of a poor young man named Ramu who falls in love with a girl who is also from a weak economic background. The two dream of a sweet and smooth future together and try to struggle with the adverse situations at hand. Ramu comes to post-partition Calcutta to find a job and earn his bread, but it does not go very easy.
The movie is artistically melodramatic, just like other movies from the director and carries forth the Bengali renaissance values in it. It has wonderful actors like Kali Banerjee, Satindra Bhattacharya, Prova Debi, Sova Sen, Ketaki Dutta, Geeta Shome, Ajit Banerjee and Keshto Mukherjee. The music was composed by Anil Chandra Sengupta.
Nagarik can be considered as the first Indian art film, as it was completed in 1952, even before Pather Panchali. But it was released many years later in 1977. If you are a fan of Bengali art films, you should not miss out on this one.
Watch ‘Nagarik’ with your friends and family this weekend. The movie is available to watch on Hoichoi.
