Earlier this month, it was announced by the Multiplex Association of India that the National Cinema Day will take place on Friday, 16th September in India. The event would enable moviegoers in the country to watch any film in the participating theatres at a flat rate of just Rs.75/- per ticket. It’s being conducted to celebrate the reopening of cinemas in India. It’s rather similar to what the US did on 3rd September by offering movie lovers tickets at just $3. In India, reputed multiplex chains like PVR, Inox, Cinepolis, Carnival, Miraj, and others will reportedly participate.
However, now the eagerly anticipated National Cinema Day event has been postponed by a week and will be held on 23rd September instead of 16th September. And apparently, the reason for the delay is that Ayan Mukerji’s star-studded, big-ticket film ‘Brahmastra: Part One Shiva’ is running in theatres.
Because if the event was held on 16th September, then it might have hampered the box-office prospects of ‘Brahmastra’, which has been made on a massive budget and a grand scale. The move would have incurred losses for the makers and as well as the multiplex chains because the present average ticket price for the film in important cities is around Rs.150/- to Rs.200/-. So, the delay makes sense.
Despite mixed reviews from critics, ‘Brahmastra’ is getting a fantastic response not only at the domestic box-office, but it is attracting audiences in markets in the US and other countries also. A sequel titled ‘Brahmastra Part 2 Dev’ has already been planned and is expected to kick-off by the end of 2022 itself.
Ayan Mukerji’s massively mounted venture ‘Brahmastra’ is also one of the most expensive Indian films ever made and features an ensemble cast that includes Amitabh Bachchan, Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Nagarjuna, Mouni Roy, and Shah Rukh Khan (in a cameo), amongst others. The film’s plot follows the protagonist named Shiva (Ranbir Kapoor) who is blessed with incredible superpowers related to fire and how he uses them to save the world from destruction.
