A few weeks back, an aesthetic monochrome teaser video of the eagerly awaited Tamil anthology series ‘Navarasa’ was unveiled by the makers. It was also revealed that the series will start streaming on 6th August 2021 on Netflix. Interestingly, the teaser was released on the ninth day of the month at 9:09 AM.
Streaming giant Netflix had earlier released another Tamil language anthology namely ‘Paava Kadhaigal’ last year. The anthology film comprised four dark and hard-hitting stories featuring eminent performers like Kalidas Jayaram, Shanthnu Bhagyaraj, Prakash Raj, Kalki Koechlin, Sai Pallavi, amongst others. The four stories were directed by Sudha Kongara, Vignesh Shivan, Gautham Vasudev Menon, and Vetrimaaran. The anthology was met with consistent critical acclaim. Now, let’s delve into the ‘Navarasa’ trailer and how it fares.
‘Navarasa’ trailer starts off with a fleeting glimpse of the actors who feature in different standalone stories. A few frames later, we see actor Suriya in a romantic avatar saying the words “The minute I saw her, I had this feeling I swear.” The intensity with which he says the line is simply adorable and it looks like he is in fine form. The subsequent snippets are replete with a range of emotions in line with the anthology’s central theme. Intriguing is the word that this ‘Navarasa’ trailer can aptly be described with.
The anthology will feature nine different segments that will be based on the nine ‘rasas’ or emotions of the Indian aesthetic theory namely anger, compassion, courage, disgust, fear, laughter, love, peace, and wonder. These nine films will be helmed by nine eminent filmmakers – Arvind Swami, Bejoy Nambiar, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Karthick Naren, Karthik Subbaraj, Priyadarshan, Rathindran Prasad, Sarjun, and Vasanth Sai.
These nine stories will feature eminent actors including Vijay Sethupathy, Prakash Raj, Revathy, Nithya Menon, Yogi Babu, Arvind Swami, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Siddharth, Gautham Karthik, Suriya amongst other supremely talented actors.
The audiences’ curiosity quotient regarding Navarasa’s release on August 6, 2021, is at an all-time high and that certainly includes us. However, with sky-high expectations of massive proportions like this especially for an ambitious project coming from veteran filmmakers like Mani Ratnam and Jayendra Panchapakesan, the pressure on the series to perfectly click with the OTT viewers is undoubtedly equally immense.
Because we have already witnessed the insipid response from another big-ticket Tamil project ‘Jagame Thandiram’. So, we are keeping our fingers crossed for this one.
