Nayanthara: Beyond The Fairytale. This documentary began as a dreamy, soft-focus look into the life of one of South India’s biggest stars. But it has turned into a PR and legal nightmare for Netflix. Nayanthara: Beyond the Fairytale, which was released in 2024, aimed to be a heartwarming documentary about the actress’s personal and professional journey. Instead, it’s now facing multiple legal storms that just won’t go away.
First, there was the infamous fallout with actor Dhanush, which ended up in court and grabbed more headlines than the documentary itself. That alone made things murky. Now, in a fresh twist, AP International, the producers of the 2005 blockbuster Chandramukhi, have filed a petition in the Madras High Court, alleging that the documentary used footage from their film without any permission.
According to them, the makers not only used scenes and songs from Chandramukhi but lifted them straight from YouTube. That’s a big copyright red flag. The court has responded by sending legal notices to Netflix India and the production company Torque Studios, and AP International is now demanding ₹5 crore in compensation.
To make things worse, they’re also asking for a permanent ban on the footage used and want it removed from the documentary altogether.
All this while, Nayanthara herself has stayed completely silent. No statements, no posts, no responses.
But why after so many months? This question is whether makers really want copyright or it is just bullying. Because everyone knew about Chandramukhi’s footage right from the beginning. After about 9 months this new strike has come which is not sitting well.
Anyway, we will keep posting about the updates.
