Netflix has acquired a 2018 released American drama film titled ‘All Rise’ also known as ‘Monster’. The Sundance Film Festival premiered movie was based on the 1999 year released novel, Monster, which was written by the Young Adult literature author, Walter Dean Myers. This is one of the few Young Adult films which features a person of colour as the primary protagonist.
The Young Adult drama follows a 17 year old honors student (portrayed by Kelvin Harrison Jr.) from Harlem. His world falls apart, when he is charged with felony murder. While awaiting his trial, the young man maintains a journal which describes his experiences in lock-up. The film touches on themes of race, colour, crime, peer pressure, teeneged masculinity and the relative & subjective nature of truth.
The script for the feature film was written by Radha Blank, Cole Wiley and Janece Shaffer while it was directed by Anthony Mandler. The film was produced by Tonya Lewis Lee, Nikki Silver, Aaron L. Gilbert, Mike Jackson and Edward Tyler Nahem. Jennifer Hudson, Kelvin Harrison Jr., Jennifer Ehle, Jeffrey Wright, John David Washington, Mikey Madison,Tim Blake Nelson, Paul Ben-Victor, Jonny Coyne and Rakim Mayers all have prominent roles in this feature.
In April 2019, Entertainment Studios had acquired the distribution rights for the film and it was then the title was renamed from ‘Monster’ to ‘All Rise’. Netflix acquired the distribution rights a few hours ago and it looks like the old title will be returning. No release date has been announced as of yet, but we are expecting a statement soon.
