Suddenly, Netflix is shifting its focus from American-centric content and investing in a plethora of global shows. Though they aren’t moving away from American titles, Netflix plans to invest more around the globe. Previously, their German shows came under the spotlight, and now their Nordic content is making headlines.
As of now, they have announced six new projects—six new feature films for the Nordic region.
The Nordic cinema scene welcomes an adaptation of the Key Series crime novels, penned by the writing duo Alexandra Coelho Ahndoril and Alexander Ahndoril under the pseudonym Alex Ahndoril. Titled “The Key Series,” the first film follows private detective Julia Stark as she investigates a murder at a wealthy family’s estate in northwest Sweden.
Netflix will also invest in “Little Siberia,” directed by Finnish filmmaker Dome Karukoski, known for “Tom of Finland.” The drama unfolds in a remote village transformed by a meteorite crashing through a car roof one fateful night. Karukoski co-writes with Minna Panjanen, adapting Antti Tuomainen’s novel. Produced by SF Studios’ Ina Sohlberg and Bufo’s Mark Lwoff and Misha Jaari, starring Eero Ritala, Malla Malmivaara, Tommi Korpela, and Martti Suosalo.
Netflix also announces “Maybe Baby 2,” a sequel reuniting two couples from the original film, navigating life together after a baby swap mix-up. Directed by Barbara Topsøe-Rothenborg and produced by Marcella Dichmann at SF Studios.
Next is “The Swedish Connection,” a WWII drama based on the true story of Gösta Engzell, a Swedish Foreign Ministry bureaucrat who aided in saving Jews in Nazi-controlled countries. The cast includes Henrik Dorsin, Sissela Benn, Jonas Karlsson, and others. Co-directed and co-written by Thérèse Ahlbeck and Marcus A. Olsson, produced by Julia Gebauer at Way Feature Films.
Additional upcoming films include the Norwegian drama “The Right Track,” following a young woman’s transformative journey to compete in a ski race despite never skiing before. Also, “Je M’Appelle Agneta,” based on Emma Hamberg’s novel, portrays a woman’s adventure as an au pair in France.
Talking about the last one in the bunch, there’s the Christmas film “The Snow Sister,” featuring Mudit Gupta, Celina Meyer Hovland, Ole Steinkjer Øyen, and Jan Sælid.
This global strategy is solid, especially since Netflix has been in the region since 2018. If they manage to create something good, it will not just benefit Netflix, but the area will also gain exposure.
