Netflix Announces Zoya Akhtar Film ‘The Archies’ Based On The Comics

Netflix India’s social media handles dropped a bombshell this morning when they announced the streamer’s next Indian Original. The streaming giant has revealed that it is making a film on the iconic comic book characters, Archie Andrews and his motley gang, comprising Betty, Veronica, Jughead, Reggie and the whole Riverdale bunch. The news sent movies and comics’ fans into a tizzy, with many taking the news favourably, but a few not in favour of an Indian adaptation.

Acclaimed filmmaker Zoya Akhtar is helming Netflix’s Archies adaptation, under her banner Tiger Baby Films. She is also the writer of the film, along with long-time collaborator, Reema Kagti. Netflix’s Archie film is tentatively titled ‘The Archies’ as of now.

Netflix announced ‘The Archies’ with a cute 4-panel comic strip that features Archie, Betty, Veronica and Jughead. Interestingly, Netflix got Daniel Parent, the official Archie Comics’ illustrator, to create the comic strip.

Netflix did not reveal the cast of its upcoming ‘The Archies’ adaptation. However, as per earlier news regarding Zoya Akhtar playing mentor to three star kids, the film will most likely have Shahrukh Khan’s daughter Suhana Khan, Boney and Sridevi Kapoor’s daughter Khushi Kapoor, and Saif Ali Khan’s son Ibrahim Khan playing the three pivotal characters in the comics’ adaptation.

Netflix is already home to two shows based on Archie Comics – ‘Riverdale’ and ‘The Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina’. The Zoya Akhtar film ‘The Archies’ will be its third property on the iconic comics.
