At present, unarguably, Netflix is the largest streaming service in the world. With number of subscribers more than 203 million (all over the globe) and thousands of titles in its content slate, Netflix has made it abundantly clear that it’s here to stay. But according to a latest research report, Disney plus will allegedly surpass Netflix in terms of number of subscribers!
Digital TV Research’s prediction says that 5 years down the line, the total number of Disney plus subscribers will reach 294 million while Netflix will be able to reach 286 million. However, if area wise estimates are to be considered, Disney+ Hotstar in India might reach 98 million subscribers and as for Netflix, it might be around 13 million subscribers. See the huge gap?
“Disney+ Hotstar will roll out to 13 Asian countries by 2026. These countries will supply 108 million (37%) of the global Disney+ subscriber total but only $2.62 billion (13%) of the platform’s revenues by 2026. Hotstar subscribers pay less than a third of the monthly subscription fee of their U.S. counterpart,” said Digital TV Research’s principal analyst Simon Murray.
Disney+Hotstar has been growing exceptionally since the past few months with constant increase in number of subscribers. Last year during the pandemic, it announced a whopping 7 big Bollywood movie premieres – Laxmii, Dil Bechara, Bhuj: The pride of India, The Big Bull, Lootcase, Sadak 2, and Khuda Haafiz. At present, Disney+Hotstar is the third most successful and popular OTT platform in India but if it manages to maintain or increase its recent growth rate, it’ll be on the top in no time! Digital TV Research’s prediction might after all, come true!
