The cancellation of Noah Centineo’s The Recruit after its recent Season 2 premiere proves that anything can happen at Netflix. The streaming giant has officially pulled the plug on Alexi Hawley’s spy action thriller. Cast member Colton Dunn confirmed the news.
While this update may surprise many viewers, given Netflix’s track record of cancelling hit shows, it shouldn’t come as a shock. Come on—we’ve endured far bigger cancellations from Netflix before, and we’ve survived.
The Recruit is a Netflix spy series about a young CIA lawyer, Owen Hendricks, who becomes entangled in dangerous international intrigue when an asset threatens to expose agency secrets.
The situation with The Recruit is different, as the show has been a major success for Netflix, even reaching near the top of streaming charts multiple times.
According to What’s on Netflix, Season 2 is underperforming compared to its predecessor. While Netflix initially praised its viewership, the numbers tell a different story. In its first week, Season 2 had 5.9 million views versus Season 1’s 7.3 million, with significantly lower watch hours (31.8M vs. 52.3M). Given its shorter runtime, Season 2 should have garnered more views, but the lack of engagement suggests waning interest.
Unlike Season 1, which saw an 83% increase in its second week, Season 2 hasn’t experienced similar growth. FlixPatrol data also shows a lower peak score (654 vs. 770). However, Season 1’s return to the global top 10 suggests that some viewers are either revisiting it or discovering it for the first time.
The show performs best in the Nordics, Africa, Australia, and parts of Europe, but its viewership has declined substantially in the U.S., Canada, and other regions.
Although The Recruit Season 2 wrapped up key plot points, it also set up a compelling future for its characters, particularly the dynamic between Centineo and Yoo. The cancellation means this promising storyline will never be explored, leading some to believe Netflix missed out on a potentially superior spy series. Stay tuned for more updates.
