Netflix has got together with Dana Ledoux Miller and Michael Russell Gunn, the creators of ‘Designated Survivor’, to bring alive the riveting Thailand caves rescue story that had grabbed headlines worldwide. Netflix has also announced an expansive cast and crew for the live-action adaptation of the extraordinary Tham Luang cave rescue story. Planned as a limited series, it will tell the real-life story of 2018’s world-famous event where 12 young footballers and their coach – known as the Wild Boars – were finally rescued from a flooded cave in Thailand after more than two weeks.
The cast includes “Beam” Papangkorn Lerkchaleampote, who will play the role of Coach Ek, the assistant coach of the young footballers’ team. Papangkorn Lerkchaleampote was also a part of ‘The Stranded’, the Thai adaptation of the uplifting rescue. The 12 rescued boys will be played by Thai newcomers, Pratya Patong, Thanaphong Kanthawong, Songpol Kanthawong, Thanawut Chetuku, Thapanot Huttaprasu, Chakkaphat Sisat, Thanapat Phungpumkaew, Teerapat Somkaew, Rattapoom Nakeesathid, Watcharaphol Poungsawan, Apisit Saengchan, and Aphisit Yookham.
The project will be brought to the screen by Showrunners and Executive Producers Dana Ledoux Miller (Designated Survivor, Lodge 49) and Michael Russell Gunn (Billions, Designated Survivor), and Directors and Executive Producers “Baz” Nattawut Poonpiriya (Bad Genius, One for the Road), who will direct the first episode, and Kevin Tancharoen (Warrior, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.). Executive producers also include John Penotti (Crazy Rich Asians) for SK Global Entertainment; Jon M. Chu (Crazy Rich Asians, In the Heights) and Lance Johnson (Troop Zero) for Electric Somewhere; John Logan Pierson (Spenser Confidential); Tim Coddington (Mulan).
Principal photography will take place primarily on location in Thailand. The series is planned for a global Netflix release in 2022.
