The Sandra Bullock starring Netflix horror thriller ‘Bird Box’ is getting an expanded Universe, starting with a Spanish spin-off film. The Netflix original film is based on the 2014 novel of the same name by the American novelist Josh Malerman. The original Bird Box producers Dylan Clark (The Batman) and Chris Morgan (Fast & Furious: Hobbs & Shaw) will return to collaborate with Netflix, for this Spanish movie.
Spanish duo Alex and David Pastor best known for their brilliant work in the Netflix film ‘The Occupant’ and HBO Max’s TV series ‘The Head’ will be coming on board as both writers and directors. Adrián Guerra and Núria Valls will be producing this yet to be titled spin-off film. Although the cast has not been set yet, the production for this film is expected to start by the end of this year, in Spain.
David Kosse, the VP of international film for Netflix will have this spin-off under his local-language slate, but we think this is just the beginning, for both Netflix and Kosse. We expect a series of local language Bird Box spin-offs to follow, and we wouldn’t be surprised to see an Indian version/ multi-regional Indian version as part of this expanded universe.
Bird Box, which released back in 2018 was a massive hit on Netflix, with Sandra Bullock re-cementing her status as a megastar and also a bankable one for streaming platforms as well. According to Netflix, the post-apocalyptic thriller got watched by 89 million households over its first four weeks of release – the second most ever for one of their original films.
The original film followed a mother (portrayed by Bullock) who tries to protect herself and her two children from the entities who push people to commit suicide once they look at them. Pretty much the entire movie unfolds with all three of our main characters covered in blindfolds and venturing into the “wilderness”, while trying to survive.
Netflix is also in the process of making a sequel for Bird Box. Josh Malerman has released a sequel to his novel titled Malorie last year and has told reporters that the sequel film is currently in development.
