Netflix has teamed up with DreamWorks Animation for the latter’s upcoming animated film, Orion and the Dark. The movie will premiere on the streaming platform in 2024.
Orion and the Dark is the second DreamWorks project that will arrive on Netflix after Trollhunters: Rise of the Titans (2021). The streaming giant struck a deal last year with the film studio, according to which it would receive all new movies from the studio in the United States for a limited time after they complete their time in theatres.
The film has been developing at DreamWorks Animation for the last two years. DreamWorks officially announced the movie and its collaboration with Netflix at this year’s Annecy Film Festival. It takes inspiration from the best-selling picture book Orion and the Dark by Emma Yarlett.
Sean Charmatz will helm the forthcoming animated project. He is well-known for his work in The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part (2019), Trolls (2016), and SpongeBob SquarePants (1999). However, Orion and the Dark will be his first solo directional project. On the other hand, Charlie Kaufman has written the script for the film. He is prominent for his writing duties in Being John Malkovich (1999), Confessions of a Dangerous Mind (2002), and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004). His most recent collaboration is with Netflix for ‘I’m Thinking of Ending Things.’
Peter McCown will produce the film, and Walt Dohrn will serve as the executive producer for Netflix and DreamWorks Animation’s Orion and the Dark. Stay tuned for more updates.
