Netflix Drops Final Trailer For The Sports Film ‘Baggio: The Divine Ponytail’

Netflix has brought the story of the Italian legend, Roberto Baggio, to life with this upcoming biographical sports film, ‘Baggio: The Divine Ponytail’. The final trailer for this upcoming Netflix original film was released a few hours ago and the movie is dropping in the beginning of the last week of May 2021. Check out this trailer at the end of this article.

Roberto Baggio was an Italian footballer who was prominent in the 80s and 90s. He has played for seven Italian clubs in his football career which include Vicenza, Fiorentina, Juventus, A.C. Milan, Bologna, Inter Milan and Brescia and is the current seventh-highest goal scorer in Serie A (The Italian Football League). He has been hailed by many as one of the greatest footballers of all time and is most famous for single handedly dragging his country, Italy to the finals of the 1994 World Cup, where he missed the final shot of the penalty shoot-outs.

The trailer about this much celebrated legend starts off with the infamous ponytail, as Baggio walks into the Giants stadium for his first 1994 World Cup match, in New Jersey. We are then given a flashback, with a young 17-year old Baggio telling his father that his contract has been bought by Florentina for 1.5 million Euros from Vicenza, making him one of the most expensive teenagers at that time. This will eventually be overshadowed by how much Juventus will pay to get him from Florentina – 8 million Euros, making him the most expensive football player at that time. But before all that, Baggio gets injured at 17 years, before his big move to Florentina, sidelining him from football for a year. During that time, Baggio was initially told by doctors that he would likely never play football again, but Florentina’s interest in him was so high, that they paid for his surgery and physiotherapy sessions and eventually started to get into form by the third season of his contract in Florentina.

The movie will cover his recovery from injury, his involvement in the 1994 World Cup and how he was revered by the Italians, like Maradona was among the Argentians. He was called the “Divine Ponytail”, because of the religion he followed (Buddhism) and the hairstyle he sported for the majority of his footballing career. As ‘Pele: Birth of A Legend’ showed, sports biographies can be brilliant if done right. And this trailer shows that this movie has everything it needs to be epic.

‘Baggio: The Divine Ponytail’ will premiere on Netflix on May 26th 2021.
