Well, the title is a bit of a stretch – but that is Netflix’s ultimate aim with its latest technological venture – online games. Netflix is planning to enter this new market by adding games onto the streaming platform, by next year. Although they are still some ways away from implementing this new change, if it does become successful, Netflix will have set a new precedent in the tech industry by 2023.
Every multinational corporation has been constantly improving and foraying into markets similar to its starting venture/ business to improve its overall marketability and market control. PepsiCo, The Coca-Cola Company, Disney, Microsoft, Sony, Nestle among others are excellent examples of these corporations. Nestle, PepsiCo and The Coca-Cola Company are the biggest names in the food business. Disney has become one of the largest mass media and entertainment companies in the world. Microsoft and Sony are tech giants with them having a huge market share for console gaming through their respective consoles – the X-box and the Play Station gaming unit (Nintendo is also a contender here).
Similar to the previously mentioned companies, Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and Disney+ have become a few of the biggest international streaming services in the world. And now, Netflix is planning to venture into gaming. They have brought on former Electronic Arts and Facebook executive, Mike Verdu, as its Vice President of Game Development. Expected to drop next year, the gaming format will be available as a different format altogether on the streaming platform, similar to how movies, TV series and documentaries are differentiated. For the time being, the new “gaming system” will be available for free on Netflix.
Netflix has been planning to venture into the video gaming market for a while now. Its first announcement in this direction came with the free-to-play Stranger Things mobile game that was announced at E3, back in 2019. The streaming platform has also experimented with interactive movies and TV shows such as ‘Black Mirror: Bandersnatch’, ‘Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt: Kimmy vs the Reverend’ and ‘Carmen Sandiego’, with relative success.
