Netflix, once notorious for its ceaseless river of content, is undergoing a transformation in its film strategy. In 2018, “Saturday Night Live” humorously depicted Netflix as an “endless scroll,” reflecting the overwhelming quantity of movies and shows it churned out. The streaming giant’s approach was clear: quantity over quality. In 2020, Netflix announced plans to release a new movie every week, resulting in a mixed bag of films.
Scott Stuber, the head of Netflix’s film division, acknowledges this phase in Netflix’s evolution, saying. However, Netflix is now shifting gears, opting to make fewer bets. Instead of producing approximately 50 films per year, the goal is to back between 25 and 30. This change is resulting in one of Netflix’s strongest fall film lineups in recent memory, featuring a mix of broadly appealing genres and Oscar contenders.
Netflix’s newfound focus on quality over quantity is evident in its fall lineup, which includes critically acclaimed films like “Maestro,” a major awards contender. Stuber explains this shift, saying, “Right now, we’re not trying to hit a set number of film releases. It’s about ‘Let’s make what we believe in.'” The emphasis is on creating a slate that Netflix can stand behind and proudly present to its audience.
Moreover, the streaming landscape has evolved with the entry of competitors like Disney+, Paramount+, HBO Max, and Peacock, who initially pulled their content from other networks and streaming services to launch their own platforms. However, they are now returning to licensing their content to Netflix and other streamers, offering subscribers a wider array of content.
