If you ever had a gig to discover cinema around the globe, you might have stumbled upon Middle Eastern cinema, especially Israeli, Iranian, and Iraqi cinema, which is one of the purest forms of the craft. And it looks like Netflix is now making an attempt to dive deep.
Netflix picked up the streaming rights for the Israeli title “A Body That Works,” and that too for more than 100 territories, a series that managed to create a big buzz last year.
This is also a result of the budding relationship between Netflix and Israeli networks, which are collaborating to acquire the local hits and bring them all around the globe.
The story revolves around Ido and Elli, a loving couple who desperately yearn for a child but suffer from infertility. Faced with this heartbreaking reality, they turn to surrogacy and connect with Chen, a young woman carrying hope and financial constraints.
Their initial agreement transforms into an intricate web of relationships as the pregnancy progresses.l, complicating the dynamics which was already a spider’s web.
The film not only is successful in terms of working on a simple yet deep plot, but like most Middle Eastern films, “A Body That Works” manages to showcase the psychological sides of the characters, putting enough light on them.
Ido and Elli manage to showcase their chemistry flawlessly as Chen also shows a phenomenal transformation on the screen. And like all serious films, “A Body That Works” manages to draw out a very powerful social message.
It talks about the surrogacy issue that is present in Israel. Though it has been legal in the country for a long time, the freedom comes with a bit of constraints. The state and the government monitor such cases and even restrict them who are medically able to have kids but prefer surrogacy anyway.
There are eight episodes in the series, but Netflix is yet to announce the release date. But the OTT giants should make it quick; they need to hit the iron when it’s hot.
