Netflix has just snapped up the upcoming Chinese fantasy drama ‘Yin And Yang Master‘ for worldwide streaming on its platform. The streaming giant made the smart acquisition even before the film has released in the theatres. It is slated to release in Chinese theatres on February 12, just in time for the Chinese Lunar New Year break. A word of caution: do not confuse this 2021 Yin And Yang Master with the 2020 release ‘Yin And Yang Master: Dream Of Eternity’, even though that movie is already streaming on Netflix. The latter is a different movie altogether, and is in no way connected to the new Netflix acquisition
The Chinese Lunar New Year holidays are the most lucrative period for the Chinese Box Office. The seven-day holiday period sees the Chinese people make a beeline for the theatres for their favourite entertainment activity – watching the latest blockbuster in the theatres. That is the reason why Chinese production houses look to release their tentpole films in theatres around this time.
Yin And Yang Master is based on the popular mobile game Onmyōji. It stars Chen Kun and Zhou Xun, and is directed by Li Weiran. The official description from Netflix reads: In The Yin Yang Master, the world is on the verge of a devastating war with the monsters who are coming back to retrieve the Scaling Stone. Yin Yang Master Qingming (Chen Kun)’s life is in danger and he travels to different worlds to prepare for the upcoming assaults. On his journey, Qingming finds that the key to all the calamities is embracing his hybrid identity of both human and monster. In the film, we see Chen Kun and Zhou Xun’s characters Qingming and Bai Ni in a relationship. William Chan plays Ci Mu, portrays a sophisticated character that transforms from good to evil.
Besides the cast, Yin And Yang Master boasts an excellent crew. The production designer is Yoshihito Akatsuka, who has worked on films such as Journey to the West: The Demons Strike Back and Kill Bill. The music composer is Shigeru Umebayashi of In the Mood for Love fame. The fights have been choreographed by Nicky Li, who’s earlier worked on Rush Hour and Shock Wave 2. Finally, Yin And Yang Master has been produced by Chen Kuo-fu and Chang Chia-lu, producers of the popular Detective Dee franchise.
Netflix has bought the exclusive global streaming rights for Yin And Yang Master, except for China. No streaming date has been announced yet.
