May 2024 for a long time to come will remain a month to look up to for Netflix India. And we have ample reasons to claim so.
Why are we saying this will be clear in the report? But firstly, it is time to visit the prominent releases of the month.
Original Series
Heeramandi
Licensed Movies
Shaitaan, Crew
Analysis
Before we begin with any kind of analysis, let’s take a moment to appreciate how amazing of a success Laapata Ladies became. Yes, it came to Netflix India in April but the success was received in May. Eventually, it surpassed every Hindi film on Netflix. It is now the most watched Hindi movie on Netflix and we must be very proud of our audience. This phenomenal film got recognition due to Netflix and it is precisely the reason OTT will continue to thrive.
Regardless, let’s come back to the analysis. The only series released this month is Heeramandi. The series needs no introduction. Yes, the critics were a little disappointed and they had ample reasons to be so. The script was seriously flawed, the casting could have been far better and the approach too needed refinement. However, Bhansali rightly said that there would never be another Heeramandi. The series stands tall in saying how grand Indian OTT can possibly reach. The sheer magnanimity and ambition of the show is an achievement in itself. The visuals, sets, music, and costumes are something we have never really seen. Even the reception from the audience was huge. Despite a lot of trolling, the series got an insane amount of views. Perhaps, the negativity helped the series to gain success. With the chances of sequels coming up, Heeramandi will become even more special.
Licensed movies like Shaitaan and Crew did well. However, they were towered by Laapata Ladies and they couldn’t really reach the potential in front of that tiny budget film. But, we would always be happier for a film like Laapata Ladies instead of Shaitaan or Crew.
We give Netflix India a solid 7 out of 10. Heeramandi was shining throughout the month but we wished to have more releases.
