The Royals, despite being one of Netflix’s most-watched shows recently, hasn’t impressed the critics at all. The reviews have mostly been poor, with many calling it over-the-top and lacking depth. Now, lead actor Ishaan Khatter has spoken up about something that hints at what might really be going wrong behind the scenes.
Ishaan has recently revealed that he had multiple disagreements with the makers over the constant shirtless scenes. He said that even though his character was supposed to be someone who doesn’t wear a shirt often, he did question some of the scenes where going shirtless just didn’t make sense. He mentioned how the makers were insistent on unnecessary scenes of the actor being topless, which led to a couple of arguments of the actor against the creators. He proclaims the direction, coming up with new and creative ways to justify it.
This clearly shows that the makers of The Royals were more focused on adding spice and glamour than working on the story or characters. While the show may have pulled in viewers because of its sensualized content and star cast, this kind of approach doesn’t promise much for future seasons or future shows, for a fact. With Netflix already announcing season two, fans and critics alike are wondering if it will improve or just continue chasing this ‘masala’ and audience that comes with it. When even the lead actor isn’t fully convinced, it says a lot about where the priorities really lie.
Byt when everything boils down to commercial gains then hell yeah, The Royals is a hit.
