There is a particular philosophy called Charvaka in which a man is responsible solely and solely for his own pleasure without any answer whatsoever to society. Looks like Netflix just became a victim of that. Very rarely do we see any big company getting exploited by a single man but it has happened nonetheless.
Netflix’s foray into the sci-fi realm took an unexpected turn when director Carl Rinsch left a trail of reckless spending and financial mismanagement. In 2018, the streaming giant invested a whopping $55 million in a sci-fi series helmed by Rinsch, only to find that not a single episode has seen completion.
Rather than channelling the funds into the project’s development, shocking revelations expose Rinsch’s extravagant exploits. Reportedly, he diverted a huge $11 million towards high-stakes stock investments and the volatile cryptocurrency, Dogecoin. Astonishingly, he managed to flip his crypto venture, turning Netflix’s money into a $27 million windfall.
With newfound wealth, Rinsch embarked on a lavish spending spree that would put any Hollywood blockbuster budget to shame. Five Rolls-Royces, a Ferrari, opulent furniture, and designer clothing were just a few items on his extravagant shopping list. This reckless disregard for financial responsibility raises serious questions about oversight within Netflix’s production dealings.
Rinsch’s dubious financial choices are underscored by his directorial track record. His sole feature film, ’47 Ronin,’ received a dismal 16% on Rotten Tomatoes. His management of the sci-fi series project further exhibited a disregard for the well-being of the cast and crew, with punishing schedules and unsafe working conditions.
Netflix’s conviction that the series had the potential to become the next sci-fi sensation, akin to ‘Stranger Things,’ now appears to be a deadly miscalculation. It is unimaginably sad and almost shocking how can a director do this. Well, Netflix may look for legal actions now, which they should. Let’s see what goes on.
