South Korean shows and movies have no stopping when it comes to reach and impact! They’re a worldwide unstoppable phenomenon today! They’re nailing genre after genres with their limited series, Kdramas and movies. Be it thrillers, fantasy, drama, romance, romantic comedy, political thriller, crime thriller and what not. But let’s divert our focus on how Netflix Korea has been ruling the Romance genre more than Netflix India ever will.
Netflix Korea dropped ‘20th Century Girl‘ recently. This cute little story on forgotten relationships and first love has been winning hearts worldwide. But what’s interesting is the rage it has become in India too. The film has been consistently trending on Top 10 Movies list by outdoing most popular Indian titles. This is quite an achievement for the film but not a surprise because romance as a genre has a huge market in India. Indians are still suckers for cliched and dramatic love-stories provided they are well written and they deliver.
If we take a look at how Korean entertainment has owned the genre, we can see that kdrama titles like Business Proposal, Twenty Five Twenty One, Extraordinary Attorney Woo, Crash Landing On You etc have all been a rage in India in recent times. To cut it short, South Korea does romance and romantic comedy much much better than Bollywood whose strong suit has been romance once upon a time. The same pattern has been reflecting on the way Netflix India functions too. None of Netflix India originals crosses over or makes an impact like 20th Century Girl did. Bigger event films like RRR and Gangubai Kathiawadi crossed over and made numbers for Netflix but they are still not Netflix India originals. Netflix Original Films like Plan A Plan B , Meenakshi Sundareshwar etc have been doing nothing good to the genre rather than butchering it.
It is high time that Netflix India creatives introspect their Indian content and realise what exactly is lacking in the work they put out. Its high time they figure out what is restricting their content from crossing over. Most importantly they should know that romance as a genre if well done can cross-over unimaginably. The first step in the regard is to make better originals, hire better writers and make universal love-stories with charming leads again. They could also amplify some of our well made rom-coms like Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, Ok Kanmani, Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na, Hasee Toh Phasee, Jab We Met simultaneously etc. One genre at a time.
