Netflix has bought the rights for five-time Emmy nominee Chris Smith’s documentary ‘Sr.’, an affectionate tribute to maverick filmmaker Robert Downey Sr. And going by the reports, the makers alongside Netflix are planning on aggressively pushing ‘Sr.’ for Oscars this season.
‘Sr.’ is said to be a lovingly irreverent portrait of the life and career of maverick filmmaker Robert Downey Sr. that quickly devolves into a meditation on art, mortality, and healing generational dysfunction. What began as a straightforward documentary quickly devolved into something much more. It tries to capture some glimpses of the highs, lows and everything in-between in the life Robert Downey Sr.
Directed by Chris Smith ‘Sr.’ is co-production between Team Downey and Library Films. The producers for the documentary include Team Downey’s Susan Downey, Robert Downey Jr., Emily Barclay Ford; and Kevin Ford.
After having its world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival, ‘Sr.’ is now set to screen at the New York Film Festival on October 10, 2022 with an encore screening on October 11, 2022.
‘Sr.’ will premiere on Netflix later this year and is the second collaboration between the streaming giant and Team Downey after the fantasy series ‘Sweet Tooth’ which is heading into its second season. It is also Smith’s next project with Netflix following ‘Bad Vegan’, ‘Operation Varsity Blues’, ‘Fyre’, ‘Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond’ and more.
