Netflix’s recent foray into live sports programming with “The Netflix Cup” marked a significant shift from its traditional content offerings. The event, a one-off golf tournament held at the Wynn Golf Club in Las Vegas, brought together stars from two of Netflix’s acclaimed documentary series, “Drive To Survive” and “Full Swing.”
The unique format paired Formula 1 drivers with professional golfers for an eight-hole match-play tournament, with the top two teams advancing to a winner-take-all ninth hole. While not at all a major golf event, The Netflix Cup aimed to captivate audiences with its unconventional pairing of sports personalities.
The four F1 drivers featured in the tournament were Williams’ Alex Albon, Alpine’s Pierre Gasly, McLaren’s Lando Norris, and Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz. They teamed up with professional golfers Rickie Fowler, Max Homa, Tony Finau, and Justin Thomas, creating an intriguing blend of motorsport and golf.
Despite the competitive nature of the event, the focus was primarily on the live component, testing Netflix’s ability to handle live events at scale. Because in the reunion episode of Love Is Blind, Netflix terribly messed up the live event. This time, the streaming giant successfully executed the live stream without technical glitches, but audience feedback highlighted concerns about the quality of commentary and a lack of engaging elements.
Viewers expressed a preference for hearing the spontaneous banter among sportspeople over traditional commentary. While the competitive golf aspect added excitement, the success of future live sports programming for Netflix may hinge on incorporating more entertaining elements and dynamic commentary to enhance the overall viewer experience.
People said they would prefer no commentary over such poor commentary. So this is indeed a very sharp feedback which Netflix must learn. However, it is their first live sports event so we can’t expect any perfection but let’s hope they follow the feedback. Also, this event failed to create any buzz whatsoever, it will be a big task for Netflix to convince people to watch their live sports event.

I have two loves golf in Formula One. But this is almost unwatchable. Take away all the hosts, commentators and celebrities and it would be more interesting just listening to players talking to each other
