News of Netflix losing 200k subscribers this quarter has sent shock waves in the entertainment and streaming industry. Though Netflix has beaten analysts’ expectations when it comes to earnings per share, its global paid streaming subscribers number came in at 221.6 million, 200k fewer than the last quarter. As expected, the news sent Netflix’s stock crashing on the US stock markets by a massive 36%. Trade pundits are having a field day analysing what led to Netflix’s subscriber loss.
Amidst the many voices debating the same on Twitter, one voice stood out prominently over the rest. It was none other than Elon Musk, one of the most opinionated business moguls around. More significantly for Indian subscribers of Netflix, Elon Musk said exactly the same thing about Netflix’s debacle as most Indians have been saying since long – that Netflix is ‘too woke’ for its own good.
Elon Musk’s choice of words hit home perfectly, and his statement is a reflection of what Netflix’s Indian subscribers feel. Musk tweeted this in response to a news article about Netflix’s woes,
“The woke mind virus is making Netflix unwatchable”.

Well, we must say, we said it first! Indians have been calling out Netflix’s wokeness in content since forever. Check out the tweets of Indian twitterati below –
Tag @NetflixIndia they may not be able to execute a customer survey, perhaps this will help them understand where they went wrong. Go woke, go broke.

White savior complex using brown sepoys in India is bad business in a country which is not woke. Bitter pill to swallow for Netflix. Hope they learn a lesson from this debacle.

@NetflixIndia you really need to fire all wokes and get mainstream content if you want to be in business in India. Wokes sound nice but they do zero work and don’t pay your bills @reedhastings https://t.co/qlIr60qiWX

These are just some of the tweets about Netflix’s pseudo-wokeness, all from the same threads. Indian Twitter timelines are full of such tweets, calling out ‘woke’ Netflix.
Not content with his rant on Netflix’s “woke virus”, Elon Musk also tweeted about Netflix’s not-so-great sci-fi/fantasy content.
Check out –
Can they please just make sci-fi/fantasy at least *mostly* about sci-fi/fantasy?

Elon Musk has a way with words, and his words hold weight. What’s more, he’s voiced the exact thoughts of millions of Indian OTT viewers who are quite tired with Netflix’s unnecessarily preachy and left-leaning content.
Let’s see whether Netflix will pay heed, at least now!
