News of Netflix losing 200k subscribers this quarter has sent shock waves in the entertainment and streaming industry. Though Netflix has beaten analysts’ expectations when it comes to earnings per share, its global paid streaming subscribers number came in at 221.6 million, 200k fewer than the last quarter. As expected, the news sent Netflix’s stock crashing on the US stock markets by a massive 36%. Trade pundits are having a field day analysing what led to Netflix’s subscriber loss.
Amidst the many voices debating the same on Twitter, one voice stood out prominently over the rest. It was none other than Elon Musk, one of the most opinionated business moguls around. More significantly for Indian subscribers of Netflix, Elon Musk said exactly the same thing about Netflix’s debacle as most Indians have been saying since long – that Netflix is ‘too woke’ for its own good.
Elon Musk’s choice of words hit home perfectly, and his statement is a reflection of what Netflix’s Indian subscribers feel. Musk tweeted this in response to a news article about Netflix’s woes,
“The woke mind virus is making Netflix unwatchable”.

Elon Musk has a way with words, and his words hold weight. What’s more, he’s voiced the exact thoughts of millions of Indian OTT viewers who are quite tired with Netflix’s unnecessarily preachy and left-leaning content.
Let’s see whether Netflix will pay heed, at least now!
