In a landmark deal, Netflix has invested in ‘Black Mirror’ co-creators Annabel Jones and Charlie Brooker’s new production company Brook and Bones.
As per reports, the investment marks the streaming platform’s first deal in the UK and will give Netflix the option to buy out the company at the end of the undisclosed multi-year term. Netflix also has exclusive rights to all original series produced by the company and a new project is underway, an announcement for which is expected soon.
Brooker and Jones’s dystopian sci-fi series ‘Black Mirror’ is owned by Endemol Shine and Banijay Group which might prevent the creators from making further episodes for the show under Netflix unless it reaches a settlement with Endemol Shine.
The production company was launched earlier this year and has already made several key hires such as Jon Petrie as head of comedy and ‘Bandersnatch’ producer Russell McLean as producer for developing interactive shows. They’ve also hired Jo Kay and Holly Sait as head of production in drama and comedy and formatted comedy respectively.
This is Netflix’s first U.K investment although it has made similar deals with ‘The Crown’ creator Peter Morgan and acquired companies such as Millarworld, ABQ Studios and StoryBots in the last three years.
U.K has been a significant contributor to Netflix’s original content library with shows like ‘Black Mirror’, ‘The Crown’, ‘Sex Education’ and ‘Peaky Blinders’ gaining immense popularity worldwide and now with this deal finalized it’ll ensure an expansion of British-made content on the streaming platform.
