Although Netflix consistently churns out myriad new and contemporary shows and films, over the past few years, a segment of cinephiles have expressed their displeasure about Netflix not streaming some older and classic films on its OTT platform. It looks like the prayers have been heard because Netflix has recently announced that it will be celebrating films which will be completing their 20-year, 50-year, etc. anniversaries with their ‘Milestone Movies Collection’.
Netflix’s ‘Milestone Movies Collection’ initiative will start with streaming a list of fourteen films from the year 1974 which are turning 50 this year. The list includes films like Martin Scorsese’s ‘Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore’, Roman Polanski’s ‘Chinatown’, Francis Ford Coppola’s ‘The Conversation’, and ‘Death Wish’, amongst others.
Similarly, the films completing their 40th, 30th and 20th anniversaries will start streaming on Netflix from April, July, and October 2024. But this ‘Milestone Movies Collection’ will apparently be available on Netflix US. Whether these films will stream on Netflix India is not yet confirmed. And it looks unlikely.
Considering how big and important the Indian OTT market is for Netflix, the streaming giant can think about launching the ‘Milestone Movies Collection’ for Netflix India also. Because the initiative will be a surefire hit among Indian OTT viewers, whose passion and craze for movies is well-known.
Netflix’s ‘Milestone Movies Collection’ will kick-off in the US this month with films released in 1974. In case a similar initiative is launched on Netflix India also, then some popular and critically acclaimed Indian films from 1974 and other years will be made available on Netflix India as well.
The list of some of the Indian films from 1974 includes ‘Roti Kapda Aur Makaan’, ‘Majboor’, ‘Roti, ‘Imtihaan’, ‘Kora Kaagaz’, and ‘Naya Din Nayi Raat’, to name a few. Likewise, other years’ anniversaries of yesteryear Indian films could be celebrated by Netflix in a potential Indian version of Netflix’s ‘Milestone Movies Collection’.
