It seems like Netflix does have budget concerns when it comes to romcoms. The streaming giant has decided to pull the plug from the highly anticipated Nancy Meyers’ rom-com, tentatively titled Paris Paramount, over budget concerns.
The latest shelved flick had a sensational cast of A-listers: Owen Wilson, Scarlett Johansson, Penelope Cruz, and Michael Fassbender. Netflix announced the project in April 2022, with a set budget of $100 million. However, multiple sources have revealed that the film’s estimated production budget came close to $130 million. The streaming service was still fine with this scenario, But Meyers decided to add some spice to this deal and started fighting for a $150 million budget.
It is not clear how much of the film’s budget would have been spent on designing luxurious and extravagant homes, and those damn lily-white kitchens, one of the most noticeable traits of Meyers’ projects. This ‘unfortunate’ situation has forced the Something’s Gotta Give helmer to look for another home for her rom-com flick.
Meyers’ last film project was ‘The Intern’, starring Anne Hathaway and Robert De Niro. It grossed more than $135 million globally against a production budget of $35 million.
According to Deadline, Paris Paramount would have revolved around a duo of filmmakers who reunite on set begrudgingly “after falling in and out of love with each other”. No big studio has yet announced its collaboration with Nancy Meyers after Netflix decided to back out. This film would have been the director’s return to the rom-com genre since 2015. Stay tuned for more updates.
